Life & Death

"The Righteous will die and the wicked will die....
The Mujahids' who fight in Jihaad will die and those who sit at home will die.
Those who busy themselves with correct belief will die and those
who mistreat, oppress and treat people as their slaves will die...
The brave who reject injustice will die, and the cowards who seek
to cling on to this life at any price will die.
The people of great concern and lofty goals will die,
and the wretched people who live only for cheap
enjoyment will die. All will die:
"Qulloo Nafsien dha'eekatool Maut"
"Every Soul shall have a taste of death."
[Surah Al-Imran verse 185]
Wa Ba'd:
Alal Muslimeena Jami'ah! Life is a brilliant demonstration of Almighty Allah's Wisdom and knowledge, a vivid reflection of His art and power. He is the Giver and Creator of Life. Life is a dear and cherishable asset, and no sensible or normal person would like to lose it by choice. Imagine yourself at the moment of your death. What thoughts cross your mind? Memories of family and friends? Panic? Regrets? Remembrance of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala? What is death? What happens to us after we die? What is life in the Hereafter like, this new and strange world after death? Do we lose consciousness of this life? Where does our soul go? Do we feel and think the same? We are reminded in verse 185 of Surah Al Imran:
"Every soul shall have a taste of death: and only on the
Day of Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense.
Only he who is save far from the Fire and admitted to the
Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life
of this world is but goods and chattels of deception"
Ummatal Muslimeen! The ineffable feeling of crossing the boundary between this world and the next cannot be described in words, nor imagined in the mind, but can be understood only through Divine Revelation and inspiration. Let us for the next few minutes seek an understanding of death, the only certainty in life. Sometimes we may not want to know about the processes that occur after we die because we are afraid or don't want to think about it. However, this is not the attitude of a Muslim. We should be foremost in learning and understanding death, so we can live our lives accordingly. Our Beloved Nabee Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam said: [Sahih Muslim]
"Live in this world as though you are a
stranger or a traveler (passing through it)."
People of Imaan! We are on a journey and should know about the whole journey's itinerary, not just one part. Death is inevitable. It is the one thing that we can be certain about in life. We are born to die. Every soul shall have a taste of death no matter who they are. Death is a harsh and fearful reality faced by everyone who lives. No one has the power to avoid it, nor does anyone around the dying person have the ability to prevent it. Death comes to the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. This reality must be established firmly in our hearts, the reality that life in this world is limited and has an appointed end - and this end will definitely come for we are reminded in verse 185 of Surah Al-Imran:
"Every soul shall have a taste of death: and only on the Day
of Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense."
And in verse 35 of Surah Al Anbiya Almighty Allah reminds us:
"Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by
evil and by good, by way of trial. To Us must you return."
Ummatal Qur'an! In our life of probation on this Doonya, our virtue and faith are tested by many things: some are tested by calamities, and some by the good things of this life. The unity of humanity is not only in its origin but also in its ultimate aims. The final goal of humanity is Almighty Allah. From Him we come, for Him we live and to Him we shall all return. If we prove our true mettle, we pass our probation with success. In any case all must return to Almighty Allah, and then will our life be appraised of its true value. We are reminded in verse 57 of Surah Al Ankabut:
"Every soul shall have a taste of death: In
the end to Us shall you be brought back."
Ya Ibad Allah! Death is the separation of the soul from the body when the latter perishes. We should not be afraid of death, for it only brings us back to Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala. Death is not pure annihilation, but rather both the living and dead are aware, but there is a difference that can't be compared. Death is merely movement from one world to another. It can be described as a journey through a wormhole to a separate dimension of existence. In this life, the soul and the body are together except during sleep when the soul may leave the body and come back in the morning or Almighty Allah may take the soul at that time as we learn from verse 42 of Surah Al Zumar:
"It is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death; and those that die not
(He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death,
He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies)
for a term appointed. Verily in this are Signs for those who reflect."
People of Imaan! The mystery of life and death, sleep and dreams, is a fascinating enigma, of which the solution is perhaps beyond the ken of man. A vast mass of superstition as well as imaginative and psychological literature has grown up about it. But the simplest and truest religious doctrine is laid down here in a few words. In death we surrender our physical life, but our soul does not die; it goes back to a plane of existence in which it is more conscious of the realities of the spiritual word: "Almighty Allah takes the soul."
O you who believe! What is sleep? As far as animal life is concerned, it is the cessation of the working of the nervous system, though other animal functions, such as digestion, growth, and the circulation of the blood, continue, possibly at a different pace. It is the repose of the nervous system, and in this respect it is common to man and animals, and perhaps even to plants, if, as is probable, plants have a nervous system. The mental processes (and certainly volition) are also suspended in sleep, except that in ordinary dreams there is a medley of recollections, which often present vividly to our consciousness things that do not or cannot happen in nature as we know it in our coordinated minds.
Ya Bani Adam! But there is another kind of dream which is rarer - one in which the dreamer sees things as they actually happen, backwards or forwards in time, or in which gifted individuals see spiritual truths otherwise imperceptible to them. How can we explain this? It is suggested that our soul or personality - that something which is above our animal life - is then in a plane of spiritual existence akin to physical death, when we are nearer to Almighty Allah. In poetic imagery, Sleep is "twin brother to Death."
Ayyatuhal Muslimeen! Sleep being twin brother to Death, our souls are for the time being released from the bondage of the flesh. Allah takes them for the time being. If, as some do, we are to die peacefully in our sleep, our soul does not come back to the physical body, and the latter decays and dies. We still have some period of life to fulfill according to Almighty Allah's decree, our souls come back to the body when we awake from our sleep and we resume our functions in this life. It is indeed something to ponder upon; that we die each night and Allah gives us another chance at life when we wake up the next day.
Faya Ayyuhan nas! If we contemplate these things, we can see more clearly many spiritual truths: e.g. (1) that our bodily life and death are not the whole story of our existence; (2) that in our bodily life we may be dead to the spiritual word, and in our bodily death, may be our awakening to the spiritual world; (3) that our nightly Sleep, besides performing the functions of rest to our physical life, gives us a foretaste of what we call death, which does not end our personality; and (4) that the Resurrection is not more wonderful than our daily rising from Sleep, "twin brother to Death."
Alal Muslimeena Jami'ah! Life may be likened to a journey starting from a certain point and ending at a certain destination. It is a transitory stage, an introduction to the Eternal Life in the Aghirah (Hereafter). In other words, we should do all the good we can and make ourselves fully prepared to move at any minute to Eternity. We must consider our life on this earth as a chance provided for us to make the best of it while we can, because when our time to depart comes we can never delay it for a single second. If our term expires, it will be too late to do anything about it or extend it.
Ma'a Sheral Muslimeen! The best use of life, therefore, is to live it according to the teachings of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala and to make it a safe passage to the Future Life of Eternity. Because life is so important as a means to an ultimate end, Islam has laid down a complete system of regulations and principles to show man how to live it, what to take and what to leave, what to do and what to shun, and so on. We all come from Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala, and there is no doubt that we shall return to Him. Life is a trust from Almighty Allah, and man is a trustee who should handle his trust with honesty and skill, with mindfulness of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala and with consciousness of responsibility to Him.
Fallahool Musta'aan! Let us pray that we are among those who work to have an easy trip and have as the end to their journey, the final abode of Paradise . O Ya Allah, We seek refuge with You from the punishment of the Qabir. O Allah, help us to live and die as Muslims and help us to understand the true object of this life. O Allah, grant us good in this life and good in the life to come, and save us from the torment of Jahannum.
"We hear and we obey. Forgive us, our Lord! To You
is the journey's end." (Surah al-Baqara verse 285)
And Almighty Allah knows best.
The Truth is from Almighty Allah
- the errors are all mine and I stand to be corrected.
Baarak Allaahu Feekum wa-sal Allaahu wa-Sallam 'alaa
Nabiyyinaa Muhammad Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam.
Alhumdoelillah, I conclude with the Islamic Greeting:
Was Salamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu.

The first part of the post is a mind-opener. Umm correct me if I am wrong but I thought if we were to write that Qur'anic Verse in English it should have been:
"Kulloo Nafsien Dhaa'eeqatul-Maut."
"Kulloo Nafsien Dhaa'eeqatul-Maut."
